Frequently asked
What is AEO and how is it different from SEO?
AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is the practice of optimizing content for citation by AI search engines like ChatGPT, Google AI Overview, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity — as opposed to classic SEO which optimizes for blue-link Google SERP rank. The signals overlap (structured data, content quality) but diverge in important ways: AEO weighs FAQPage and Article schema more heavily, prefers JTBD-phrased H1s, and treats llms.txt + explicit AI bot allows as trust signals that classic SEO ignores.
How does the AEO Score Checker work?
We fetch your page, parse the HTML, extract every JSON-LD schema block, check for JTBD-phrased H1 patterns, look for a definitional opening sentence, count internal links, sub-fetch your /llms.txt and /robots.txt at site root, then run 17 deterministic checks and compute a weighted 0-100 score. No LLM is in the scoring path — every check is reproducible and explainable.
What's a good AEO score?
80-100: strong AEO posture, likely citable as-is. 60-79: solid foundation with optimization gains available. 40-59: citation-blocked by structural issues. Below 40: start with structured-data + JTBD H1 rewrite. The score is calibrated against pages that consistently surface in ChatGPT search, Google AI Overview, and Perplexity for their target queries.
Which signals weigh most in the score?
FAQPage JSON-LD schema (12pts) — the single biggest lever for AIO + ChatGPT search citations. Article JSON-LD (10pts) — pages with Article schema are 2-3× more likely to surface in AI Overview. JTBD-phrased H1 (8pts) — aligns with the literal query phrasings AI engines pattern-match against. Definitional opening sentence (7pts) — the most-cited paragraph by AI engines. llms.txt + explicit AI bot allows (6pts each) — trust signals that compound over time.
Does the score account for content quality?
Indirectly. The score measures the structural + technical AEO signals — schemas, headings, meta tags, robots.txt config, llms.txt presence. Content quality (depth, accuracy, originality) is judged by AI engines via their own ranking models which we don't replicate. A page can score 100/100 on AEO signals and still not get cited if the content is shallow or duplicative — but a page with thin AEO signals will rarely surface even if the content is excellent.
